Confession: I'm That Person Who...

…leaves a beautiful mountain vacation to get back to my pets (pet anxiety much?). There. I’ve said it. My love for animals runs so deep that I left the Wyoming mountains early because I was worried sick about my pets at home.

Each night, I fell asleep worrying if the teenager I hired to watch my three cats and dog remembered to check in. Every morning, I’d wonder if my dog had been let out to go potty. During the day, I worried about my cats, sitting at home, confused and alone, probably wondering why their usual people had disappeared again.

I’ve always loved animals. There are photos of me before I turned three, riding horses by myself and lying on family floors just to get closer to dogs who didn’t even know me. When I think about the pure, selfless nature of dogs, I could honestly cry. Is there a more devoted creature on this planet?

So, we wrapped up our vacation early and drove nearly 1,000 miles home. When we arrived, I found the back door wide open and the screen door shut. My dog was outside in 100-degree heat in the middle of the day, no water in sight, with his leash still around his neck.

“A cream-colored poodle wearing a leash stands on a patterned rug, while a black cat sits nearby in a cardboard scratcher, inside a cozy home.

He’s indoors in this photo now, but when we found him, he was outside, panting, and it took him an hour to cool off. The cats seemed okay, but our favorite black cat, normally so sweet and friendly, was in attack mode—tail poofy, ridge of hair standing up along his spine. It made me wonder: what happened while we were gone?

This wasn’t the first time I’d felt anxiety about pets being cared for. About six months ago, I pet-sat for family. I didn’t know their routines; I had to search for food and litter bags, and I didn’t know if the Persian kitty should go in the freezing garage or not. It hit me: pet sitting shouldn’t be so stressful or uncertain.

That’s when I decided to create a pet sitting app—SitSync—to keep pet sitters informed and owners in the loop. With AI moving as fast as it is, I expect SitSync to be up and running by the end of the year.

So, yeah, I make pet t-shirts. I love t-shirts—especially ones that last. And I love pets. But every pet shirt I saw was just so…goofy. Dog bones, frazzled cats, and not much for people like me: the ones who leave vacations early and talk to our pets all day, the ones who want to rescue every animal at PetSmart. I wanted something that felt true to us—and looked good, too.
